Finally found a cookie banner
on this website?

Why ‘cookies’ and not ‘pizzas’?

The term cookie comes from the American programmer Lou Montulli. In 1994, he worked on the problem that computers could not remember which pages the user had already visited.

He developed a new technology, which he initially called ‘persistent client state object’. This was a five-page programming text that was intended to give the Internet a memory, so to speak.

When earlier computers used parts of code to jump between previously accessed pages for identification purposes, programmers called this ‘magic cookies’.

Lou Montulli took up this name and simply shortened it. He simply called his programme: Cookie. This term is still used today.

And now? Cookies yes or no?

It is important to emphasise that cookies are often useful and sensible. However, there are situations in which they are not necessary and you can spare your users the annoying cookie banner.

It is obvious that no cookies are used on this website and therefore no consent is required. There is no information about cookies or the option to choose between different types of cookies.

The reason for this is simple: we have decided not to use cookies.

It is common nowadays for websites to display cookie banners. This indicates that most websites use cookies. Therefore, you might wonder why we deviate from this. Does this mean that we reject cookies? Or are we against tracking in general? Not at all.

Cookies are essential for certain functions and tracking is a legitimate concern for website operators. We believe that every organisation should use the (legal) tracking methods that make sense for them.

When cookies make sense?

The crucial aspect is that website operators should use sensible cookies and appropriate tracking methods. The choice of these tools depends on the functions of the website and the resources of the users.

Essential’ and “functional” cookies are not required on this website, as there is no online shop, for example. There is therefore no need to assign the contents of a shopping basket to a specific person.

However, it may be of interest to know how visitors move around the website, what they read first and what they click on. In order to obtain this information, it would be necessary to install appropriate cookies. Analysing this data requires time and resources that may not be available.

It is important to note that the use of cookies is only justified if the data collected is actually used. Otherwise, this could violate the principle of data minimisation in accordance with the GDPR.

Optimisation without cookies?

Instead of cookies, we use alternative methods to optimise the website. For example, we regularly analyse which search terms lead visitors to the website in order to gain insights into their interests. These findings influence the design of the website.

We also receive feedback on the performance of our websites and the placement of our blog posts from Google (how are the blog posts ranked?).

In addition, we receive information on user behaviour via direct contact by telephone or occasionally by email from people who contact us and may wish to use our services. These findings are also incorporated into the further development of the website content.

These methods are basic measures for the continuous optimisation of our websites. The use of cookies and their active utilisation would represent a further step.

The implementation of these measures requires appropriate resources. Otherwise, you risk collecting data that is not needed and violating the principle of data minimisation.

Use cookies sensibly

Only once an organisation has reached a certain size and the functions of a website have reached a certain level of complexity should you seriously consider using cookies. In this case, we would recommend the following:

  • Regular evaluation of the data in conjunction with the results of other analysis tools.
  • The resources to derive measures to improve your website on the basis of these analyses.
  • In view of the constantly tightening legal situation and case law, continuous legal advice is essential.

Our conclusion on cookies

If the functionality of your website does not require cookies (for example, if there is no shop, no community or no login area) and you are not aiming for data-based website optimisation, you can dispense with the use of cookies. This way you can spare your website visitors the annoying cookie banners.
